Foreigners Fear and Faith

Numbers 13.1-2, 25-33; 14.1-2b, 26-29, 34-35 of Wednesday August 4, 2021

The texts from the Roman Catholic Lectionary today invite us to contemplate the role of faith to overcome fear on our journey.

How long shall this wicked congregation complain against me? The fear that the Israelite scouts felt resulted in an effort to change the course that the Will of God had set for them to live in the Promised Land. A generation would wander in the desert as a consequence.

Psalm 106

Our ancestors, when they were in Egypt, did not consider your wonderful works. The psalmist mourns the loss experienced by the people of Israel when they were negligent in their attention to the Will of God. R.m

Matthew 15.21-28 of Wednesday August 4, 2021

Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Jesus uses the request of the Gentile woman for healing to underline the contrast between her faith and the faith of the Hebrew people. The passage raises the expansion of Jesus mission to the Gentiles. Friar Jude Winkler considers the faith that tries to buy favour from God by behavior as contrasted with those who recognize their need for God in their lives. We reflect during vacation days on the life giving experiences that have accompanied our surrender to the Will of God.
