When we are not open

The texts from the Roman Catholic Lectionary today alert us to the danger of failing to be open to promptings of messengers of God.
Hearing messages at home

The Prophet Jeremiah is threatened by death as he speaks the message of God to the people of Jerusalem to change their ways in the face of conquest and ruin by foreign political and spiritual powers.

In the Gospel from Matthew, Jesus finds He is not accepted in His hometown, where the people are blinded by their preconceived notions.

Friar Jude Winkler speaks about our call the live so that it is not possible to separate the message we proclaim from the messenger who proclaims it.

Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM, explores the Perennial Tradition and asks What do we want? If it’s union with Love, then listen to that longing and it will be a reliable guide to truth and intimacy. The texts today are very appropriate for beginning a summer visit to the hometown and familiar family and friends.
